The DIY Media Specialist may also work with other media specialists to produce, record, and edit audio/video/multimedia that resides in Berkeley’s online and blended learning courses. These courses are delivered through our Learning Management System, Canvas, and the video is distributed using Kaltura. In this role, the DIY Media Specialist will collaborate with faculty on their audio, video, and multimedia digital course content, as well as with Media Team members, Instructional Designers, and Manager within the Instructional Design and Media team at Digital Learning Services.
While hard skills in pre, post and production are the what, soft skills including a growth mindset and positive outlook, diplomacy, and genuine desire and ability to collaborate and work well with others – both clients and colleagues – are the how and essential to successful work.
Knowledge/Skills
- Provide expertise, coaching and support for instructors producing audio/video media for their remote and blended course via trainings and co-curricular workshops with Digital Learning Services and Center for Teaching and Learning.
- In consultation with Digital Learning Services Director of Photography, Editors, and Graphic Designer, identify and provide hardware and software for faculty to create DIY media for various instructional formats and domain specific needs (an example: tablets for annotations and to replace chalkboards and whiteboards).
- Manage DIY media studio including maintenance of existing set up. This instructor self-service studio is equipped with HD cameras, professional lighting, multiple backdrops, pen tablets, and a wide array of screen capture and video software.
- In collaboration with other Digital Learning Services media specialists, engineer the build out of additional studios as needed to include audio/video recording equipment as well as a Learning Glass set up.
- Manage the DIY media post-production workstations located in the Academic Innovation Studio in Dwinelle Hall. These have a range of editing tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud suite and can be used to edit media content whether captured in our studio or obtained by other means.
- Provide consultations for those that need guidance on such topics as video strategy, workflow development, tool selection, and distribution through Kaltura.
- Maintain a Knowledge Base with selected articles to support instructors in their video projects.
- Maintain a Getting Started page to support instructors in their media projects.
- On an as-needed basis, this role will also work with the Instructional Design and Media team to produce and collaborate on the production of digital media in all phases (pre-production, production, and post-production) including script writing, storyboarding, graphic treatments, directing, technical lighting, visual composition and video, audio and motion editing for online courses within programs.
- On an as-needed basis, this role will also produce, edit, and review digital media and content with a high-level of detail and accuracy and adherence to Digital Learning Services processes for online courses.
- Consult with supervisor and other professionals to ensure that digital learning media content meets campus needs and effectively delivers the desired learning outcome opportunities.
- Assist in envisioning and implementation of efficiency-enhancing workflows for course media production.
- Ensure proper publication, storage, and retention of all produced media artifacts
- Solid knowledge of and demonstrated experience with audio and video production equipment.
- Solid audio and video production skills, including sound, lighting, camera operation, and videography.
- Demonstrated pre-production skills.
- Solid creative collaboration skills and ability to adapt in a fast-paced and changing environment as needed while remaining professional and kind.
- Demonstrated post-production skills in applications for media production including Adobe Creative Cloud apps.
- Ability to monitor and assess processes or services and recommend to supervisor and team necessary improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize while effectively executing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Advanced interpersonal communication skills and collaboration skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams, political acumen and skill in troubleshooting and applying proactive and positive solutions.
- Exceptional customer/client focus.
Education/Training
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Advanced skills and experience in Pre, Post and Production and visual design
- Experience developing video and multimedia content for educational programs and online distribution.
- Experience with Kaltura
- Experience with Canvas
- Experience with tablets and pen displays and a variety of digital whiteboards
- Experience with Learning Glass
- Experience with video production for physical labs, experiments and exercises
