Reports to: Event Manager

Reporting Relationships:    Works as part of the Event Team. Directly supervises AV Dedicated Volunteer and AV contractors.

Summary of Job: Spirit Rock offers a variety of programs including residential and non-residential meditation and yoga retreats, daylongs, classes and concerts.  The AV Technician works as part of the Event team and collaborates with the Information Technology and Facilities Departments.  The AV Technician is primarily responsible for the audio visual needs of non-residential programs held in our 3 program room Community Meditation Center (CMC), as well as support of residential retreat AV needs. The AV Technician is responsible for upkeep of equipment and on-site audio support of weekend programs and Monday night talk.  The primary role of this position is to anticipate the needs of teachers and participants and work as part of the Event team to provide excellent customer service as well as first-rate AV production of programs.  

Specific Responsibilities:  

Live Event Support

  • Serve as on-site AV technician for events in the CMC.
  • Mix audio levels during live events with multiple teachers and audience interaction.  
  • Effectively troubleshoot AV issues.
  • Test microphones; fit Countryman mics and do sound checks with teachers.
  • Set up, test and run multi-media presentations, including Power Point, on a variety of platforms.
  • Set up and put away AV equipment for programs and events.  

Planning

  • Communicate and plan effectively with event staff, teachers, and musicians to coordinate AV for programs, concerts and events.
  • Ongoing knowledge of our program schedule to anticipate staffing and technical needs.  

Supervisory

  • Provide ongoing AV training to Event staff and volunteers.
  • Recruit, schedule, contract and oversee audio visual contractors and process invoices.
  • Train contractors in Spirit Rock culture as well as equipment and media systems.
  • Maintain relationships with AV techs so we have a cadre of trained techs to call on for additional support.

Maintenance & Inventory

  • Source and purchase AV supplies and equipment.
  • Research and recommend supplies and equipment for annual AV budget.
  • Make sure AV equipment in booth and closets are kept in order.
  • Assist in routine inventory of AV equipment and preventative maintenance.
  • Reset board and equipment between events to maintain default configurations.  

Projects

  • Documentation of existing equipment/mixer set up for ease of troubleshooting by AV techs, Event and IT staff.
  • Microphone EQ and DBX drive rack configuration.
  • Propose equipment upgrades.
  • Audio editing of Dharmaseed talks.

Qualifications:

  • Diverse Audio Visual technician experience to support a wide range of program needs and event types.
  • Thorough understanding of digital equalization and feedback suppression.
  • Familiarity with audio channel assignment and cable routing.
  • A flexible schedule including weekend availability from 8am-6pm most Saturdays and Sundays and Monday availability from 2-10pm.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and troubleshoot AV issues on the fly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants, teachers, volunteers and staff.
  • Provide customer oriented attitude and professional image.
  • The ability to train others and work as part of a team.
  • Basic audio recording and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of video lighting.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Desired skills:

  • Experience with Midas M32R 40 channel digital mixing board, remote camera operation (PTZ Panasonic), DBX feedback suppressor Black Magic ATEM, Livestream software and Bose Space Control Programming.  
  • Experience with digital and analog systems.
  • Experience fitting teachers with Countryman style microphones.
  • Experience routing sound to multiple rooms.
  • Experience with audio engineering and editing audio & video recordings.
  • Experience with patch and cable audio equipment.
