Introduction to Acoustics

Date: 2 Thursdays, June 20 & June 27, 2019, 6:30 – 9:00 PM

Location: WAM Studio, 542-544 Natoma St., #C-1, San Francisco, CA  94103

This class will be a introduction to the fascinating field of acoustics by acoustic consultant Jolene Stoffle of Arup San Francisco. As a multinational engineering firm, one of Arup’s many areas of expertise includes designing some of the world’s favorite cultural institutions, as well as enhancing the sonic experience in workplace, infrastructure, commercial, and urban environments. Arup has also provided the acoustic design for Women’s Audio Mission’s new, second studio. Some of their major projects include the Sydney Opera House, the Centre Pompidou, and SFMOMA.

Acoustics is the branch of physics concerned with the properties of sound. Room acoustics contribute to pleasant and productive environments in schools, workplaces, homes, and hotels. With the growth of human centered design, creating acoustic environments for optimal commercial and cultural use has become increasingly important amid the noise pollution of modern day cities. Arup works to minimize the unwanted effects of noise and vibration, controlling the specialized acoustics of sensitive laboratory environments and hospitals to ensure doctor-patient confidentiality, as well as arts and cultural institutions. Arup also tackles the emerging acoustic challenges of sustainable building design, including implementing optimized, natural ventilation systems without unwelcome street or background noise.

Students should have either taken WAM Level 1 – Intro to Audio Production or Recording or have equivalent knowledge before taking this class.

About the instructor:

Jolene has been a consultant with Arup for nearly 3 years. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science with a concentration in Sound Recording Technology at SUNY Fredonia, and a Masters degree in Architectural Acoustics from RPI. At Arup, Jolene enjoys audiovisual design in performing arts spaces and small room acoustics projects. In her spare time, Jolene is an avid reader and record collector.
